The Winds of Change – the strategic switch from Out Of Home delivery to unattended residential delivery

It is so exciting to see the how more and more carriers move from OOH to unattended residential delivery.

Kehrer Stebler AG Metallbau reporting high interest in residential locker / box solutions
The Latvian Post introducing boxes for single houses – together with Cleveron AS
Pickup, a La Poste subsidiary, is setting up residential boxes in France. Hopefully agnostic!
In Germany, DHL is pushing real estate companies to set up the DHL (non-agnostic) lockers in residential settings
Thomas Panz Jepsen is reporting very high interest in residential lockers / boxes in Scandinavia.
PostNord has made unattended residential delivery a strategic issue
Where is this development coming from?
I believe we are seeing a volume-based paradigm switch. OOH cannot cope with the future volumes and is not really what the consumer wants. The consumer wants home delivery!
In Denmark, one of the biggest OOH countries, the Danes turned to home delivery during 2020, even if they had to pay extra for this delivery solution.
The fight for locations and the non-agnostic approach of almost all public locker and PUDO operators, is turning of the consumers.
The Polish market is moving towards 6 networks of lockers and in Germany we are seeing the first food retailer moving into non-agnostic remote click & collect lockers.
A worst-case scenario could be a non-agnostic network with all carriers, big retailers, big brands and the big online platforms all operating their own lockers. That will not be customer centric at all.
The only real scalable and sustainable last Mile solution is food capable residential boxes / lockers, and these must be de-centralized installed, as even residential lockers have the 200m problem of deliveries resting +24h in the lockers if the consumer must walk 200m to pick up or return a parcel.
The future last mile infrastructure must be agnostic, and I hope more companies like PostNord, put their „old white man“ thinking behind them.
Never forget: There is no Planet B
