The new #logisticsmodel relies on #datacompetence, urban locations, and connection to the last-mile delivery infrastructures which have boomed in response to the #pandemic and subsequent lockdowns. The #impact on the key stakeholder groups:

𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸-𝗮𝗻𝗱-𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘀:
-Brick-and-mortar #retailers are ideally placed to exploit this new logistics model. But will they recognize the opportunity? The same-day delivery model is based on local retail outlets with integrated internal storage facilities which are digitally operated and highly efficient.
-These #outlets are supported by pick-and-pack infrastructure (generally available) and connections to local delivery structures, all controlled by the retailer’s data. Click-and-collect, as well unattended delivery (parcel boxes/lockers), largely depends on the same data and can also be integrated into the model.

𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀:
-Pure online players have data expertise but lack physical locations. Even the biggest #marketplaces and delivery operators are finding it hard to find and finance enough locations to support their own logistics infrastructure in urban areas. However, there is currently massive investment in this area.
-The Asian/Chinese marketplaces enjoy an advantage: in China the same-day logistics model is already dominant, and players have experience in building such models and connecting to local delivery networks. But will they have the resources to quickly expand and build their presence in Europe and North America?

𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 & 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀:
#Postaloperators are ideal partners for the new logistics model due to their ownership of large numbers of potential micro-hubs, i.e., post offices. Unfortunately, in response to financial restraints, many #postalservices have hugely downscaled their networks, depriving themselves of this massive potential asset.
-For commercial carriers, the new #deliverymodel is bad news. Their core competencies (#datamanagement, and upstream systems such as #transport and #sorting) are less relevant in the same-day delivery model. The last mile – the core of value creation –– has also been largely outsourced, and will be accessible to all (new) players with data expertise. (This is less so for players specialized in OHO logistics.)
