A very balanced article around lockers, (not just because I am quoted😀)

In the latest parcel locker update, the International Post Corporation (IPC) has put together an article which highlights pros and cons of parcel lockers.
Agnostic or not?
The location fight and the increasing cost of same
The scalability of lockers towards a future with one delivery per day and household.
And the biggest question. Are lockers adding or saving emissions.

The article highlights some of the misleading information still obscuring this discussion. “Lockers per 10,000 inhabitants as a unit of measure” is not good. The various sizes of lockers from the 13 compartments per locker in Mechelen, Omnic stating at least 36 compartments needed and InPost and DHL both having an average of 140 to 150 compartments per location.
Also, it is not the locker, but the consolidated delivery to (bigger) lockers which could influence emissions. Small agnostic lockers, with a possible drop rate as low as 1 (=home delivery), will make locker the worst last mile solution in term of emissions. (Rebound effect from consumers when picking up parcels)

The often-quoted NPS score of lockers.
I would like to see the following questions answered by the consignees “preferring” public lockers: “Would you prefer having to pick up your parcels from a public locker or would you rather have a private parcel box at your home?” Then we will see what consignees really prefers!
The high NPS is more likely to be a pest / cholera choice. Wait at home (in vain) or pick up from a locker at your own convenience, and if picking up postal item out of home is so preferred, why not do the same with letters?

What we know for sure is that locker / PUDO delivery is cheaper than home delivery today, but with volume increases, and dedicated parking for delivery vans, very high drop rates will be achieved with home delivery in residential parcel boxes. The drop rate, with consolidated deliveries, could be equal to today’s locker drop rates.
