Just as the ‘Big Bang’ of 1986 revolutionized the financial markets, the EU VAT e-commerce package which comes into force 1 July 2021 will redefine global online retail. CLS will comment on some of the impacts in its upcoming blog article later this week.

Recently, both La Poste and Deutsche Post DHL have announced that they will charge NO fees for digital customs clearance, when a customer is registered with IOSS. This has the potential to disrupt the postal logistics market, as postal delivery has been used for 70%+ of commercial items sent “pre- 1.7.2021”.
Other EU postal operators have announced – based on existing agreements (e.g. UPU) – that they will charge up to 4 EUR for digital customs clearance for low-value consignments.
La Poste’s and Deutsche Post DHL’s offer aims at gaining volumes for delivery in all of EU, using their existing delivery channels. It´s obvious what those two players have in common – they´re operating internationally / globally and both own big, non-postal carriers such as DPD and DHL.
What will be the impact on small and medium-sized postal operators? Will they be “reduced” to last-mile subcontractors receiving their international volume from their bigger colleagues? What will be the impact on third-country suppliers and commercial carriers? What do you think?
