Moratorium on Last Mile Facilities in the cities?
The Dutch cities banning the Q-commerce operators, at least for a year, and now San Francisco trying to stop ecommerce logistic centers close to and around the city. Similar thoughts are being communicated by Transport for #London, #Barcelona creates green zones, #Vienna is looking to regulate Out of Home solution like Automatic Parcel Machines and collection points, and in Poland, lockerland #1, cities are looking into possible regulation as well, and they all have one thing in common.
Local governments are looking to regulate the logistic infrastructure like fulfillment / distribution centers, Q-commerce dark stores and the APM infrastructure to lessen their impact on space and traffic.
The arguments are always the fight for space and traffic. Ecommerce logistics requires a lot of space and generates traffic if done by the “old” models, and even more so if the infrastructure is moved closer to the actual recipient.
Cities wants to created cities with affordable living, green areas for recreation and low to no traffic.
This collides with a couple of new developments like Micro Fulfillment Centers and Micro Depots, concepts which are based on closeness to the consumer / recipient.
Also, Q-commerce with its dark Stores and promise of delivery in 10 to 30 minutes could be wiped out if this becomes the rule.
Maybe the industry should ask itself whether instant delivery is a real need or “just” a way of gaining market share?
Are micro hubs/depots just a result of the dream of bicycle delivery (and can it be financed)? Could this delivery be done just as green with other concepts?
Do not forget that we are getting closer to „one delivery per day and household“. Maybe we should all reconsider todays delivery concepts?
Governments seem to have learned to react faster to new development and wants to have a say around how the future is going to look like. And I cannot really blame them. I too want clean air, affordable living, and less traffic.
