Dual Green and Digital Transition of the postal sector

von | Jan. 21, 2022 | News Mitglieder

The #postalsector is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas (#GHG) emissions. This is the consequence of its international #transportationnetwork, universal reach to even the remotest areas of the #global, transport-intensive daily last-mile delivery services, and significantly growing domestic and non-domestic parcel volumes stimulated by the #digitalization of #retail and related delivery.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗚𝗛𝗚
The Universal Postal Union (#UPU), its 192 Member Countries and their designated postal operators (#DO), have taken steps to reduce GHG emissions by adopting voluntary targets for its operations over a defined period. These targets reflect nationally determined contributions and #climatechangegoals under the Paris Agreement on #climatechange

𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀
The sector will ensure knowledge sharing on carbon offsetting emission reduction strategies, climate finance and climate adaptation measures among DOs and other postal sector entities.
The UPU will develop #carbonneutral international postal services as part of the Union’s portfolio of optional services, drawing on the reports of GHG emissions caused by receiving, #sorting, transporting and delivering #postalshipments per item in Union Member Countries in which such reporting is already available for domestic or international services.

𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆
Digitalization of the postal processes associated with every single #ecommerce delivery puts the postal sector at the forefront when it comes to developing services for the #circulareconomy. It will focus, in particular, on #waste#recycling, sustainable production, and the efficient use of resources.

𝗗𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗘𝗣 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳
Twinning the green and digital transitions will impact human resource management in the postal sector. The provision of environmentally sound and digitally optimized postal products and services which meet the delivery preferences of recipients is only possible with delivery workforces that are highly trained and motivated: realizing the potential 15% – 30% rise in #lastmiledelivery efficiency made possible by digitally optimizing each step in the delivery chain must not be allowed to create a working environment in which postal and #CEP delivery staff are unfairly exploited.
