𝗘𝗨 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 – 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹

More than 50 years after its #foundation, the #EU Customs Union constitutes the basis for the #SingleMarket and remains a key pillar of EU #integration.

Building onto the #success of the 2021 EU #VAT #Ecommerce package, the framework of the Customs Union is now under revision in order to accommodate the twin green and #digital transitions. The recent and dramatic shifts in #geopolitics and the #worldeconomy have changed the shape of #globaltrade, exacerbating the need to modernise the #Customs Union, together with its regulatory and #governance framework.

The EU Customs Reform is an ambitious and comprehensive attempt to make the Customs Union fit for the decades to come. Involving all #stakeholders in the EU in developing and revising harmonised technical and messaging #standards is essential to create a true #union of EU customs #authoritiesoperating in unison, and will empower EU Customs to best serve the #EU, its #citizens and #businesses.

EU #industry needs a level playing field, while #citizens and #consumers want #safeproducts, environmental #accountability which complies with the Paris #agreement goals of #carbonneutrality by 2050, and adherence to social standards. Under the #guidance of the Spanish EU #presidency, EU Member states and the #EuropeanParliament will engage and work in trilogue to agree on the European Commission’s Customs Reform in the second half of 2023.

The application of a tailor-made EU Customs #ecommerce #regime comes at a time when all European stakeholders are engaged in bringing harmonised advance #data exchanges to the next level as well as end-to-end environmental #delivery #footprints for individual #B2C #retail supplies.

As a result of the #reform, #legislation, #regulation and #standardisation will all be aligned to better meet the #needs of the EU member states, their #citizens, and European #businesses engaged in cross-border European and #international #digitalretail.
