The past two decades have seen significantย #efficiencyย gains in postalย #automatization. With growing letterย #postย #volumesย came increased addressย #readabilityย (OCR) and sizeย #harmonization,ย #Dataย generated in sorting centres, byย #machineย reading, weighing, and sizingย #capabilities, was used to raise efficiency and decrease theย #costย ofย #lastmiledeliveryย which, in many cases, still represents more than 40% of the overallย #deliveryย cost. The more recent increase inย #B2Cย #volumesย caused by theย #growthย inย #digitalretail, however, leads to different dataย #requirementsย andย #solutions.
Today, electronic advance data (#EAD) is mandatory for postalย #itemsย containing goods. The firstย #CEPย (courier,ย #expressย orย #parcel)ย #operatorย in the deliveryย #chainย handles these โpostal relatedโ dataย #elementsย (#sender/recipient/postal fees/insurance/weight/size) andย #issuesย a unique transport ID (barcode) which ensures that theย #EADย is directly linked to the individualย #consignmentย prior to its induction into the delivery chain (โLeg 1โ).
The uniqueย #transportย #IDย on each consignment is now available to all those entitled to use it along the entire delivery chain. Thisย #changesย not only theย #systemsย andย #processesย of collectingย #consignmentsย (โLeg 1โ) and theย #freightย andย #transportย linehaul (โLeg 2โ), but most notably theย #preparationย of โLeg 3โ (last mile delivery) where we will see significant cost and efficiency enhancements.
Todayโsย #sortingย centres are located on city outskirts, centrally managed, and difficult to adjust toย #changingvolumes,ย #sizesย andย #weights, and generate highย #fixedcosts. However, theย #trendย towardsย #decentralization,ย #scalability, workload-sharing, andย #downstreamย andย #upstreamย access to the delivery chain demands last mile deliveryย #solutionsย that areย #flexible, modular and easy to deploy or relocate.
This will make flexible solutions which are fully linked to the EAD on any consignment a competitive necessity. This, in turn, ensures delivery event-related information is compliant (#riskmanagement,ย #safetyย andย #security,ย #taxย andย #duties), and makes assetย #optimizationย (optimization and flexibilization of footprint) and evenย #capacityย scalability feasible.
Harmonized transport IDs also allow a variety of differentย #CEPย operators to cover Legs 1, 2 and 3. This is a capability demanded by municipalities who are adapting their smartย #cityplanningย to incorporate highly scalable and on-demand solutions which can optimize delivery ofย #B2Cย #suppliesย to meet the needs of endย #consumersย andย #recipients.
