UPU Consultative Committee: wider postal sector input in 2023
For the first time, the UPU’s #membership classes and Rules of Procedure (shorturl.at/nyQSV) allow Wider Postal Sector Players to be members of a UPU Committee. By the end of the CA plenary in October 2022, the UPU Consultative Committee (UPU CC) had gained 15 new members, mostly GOLD class. This extremely encouraging #development was only possible because, despite limited #resources, the UPU CC worked closely as a team to attract, welcome and guide new members through the #application process, #securing the necessary authorisations and #endorsements of the member countries.
2023 will see UPU CC members actively involved in the work and deliberations of the UPU Postal Operations Council (#POC) and UPU Council of Administration (CA), under the #leadership of the rapporteurs of the thematic chapters already established within the UPU CC.
In these bodies, work will be conducted to further enhance the participation of Wider Postal Sector Players in the work of the UPU, leading to consensus #proposals on institutional #reform as well as #policies on accessing UPU #products and #services which will then be decided at an extraordinary UPU Congress in October 2023. The UPU CC and its members have been invited to contribute and participate in this #process.
As a special #organisation of the #UN dedicated to developing and adapting #legislation, #regulations, technical and message-related specifications for the #postalsector globally, the act of opening-up the UPU is a #complex and #demanding endeavour. Digitalized #communications, #retail and #trade are all #changing the nature of #postal #delivery, so that the know-how, #experience and #expertise offered by the Wider Postal Sector Players constitutes vital #input to the #work of the UPU. Through their #Involvement, the UPU CC members will be demonstrating their #commitment to a lasting and #sustainable #global postal delivery #network in which the UPU acts as a unifier of networks and #solutions for the #benefit of #citizens worldwide.
As Chairperson of the UPU CC, I am grateful for the exceptional #support of the UPU CC secretariat led by our secretary Alexander Thern-Svanberg and the UPU IB staff. The outstanding #successes we have achieved this year would not have been possible without their dedication and hard work. With their support, I am confident that 2023 will be another exceptional year for the #UPU CC.
