Open UPU: Amazon.com, Inc. joins UPU CC as its latest member

von | Jan 17, 2023 | News, News Mitglieder

As of 1 July 2022, #postal stakeholders that are not #public postal #operators or #regulators can become #direct members of and participate actively in the work of the Universal Postal Union (#UPU), and cooperate with other UPU members within the UPU #framework through the Consultative Committee (CC). This series reports on our new members.

Endorsed by the United States of America, Amazon.com, Inc., founded 1994 by Jeff Bezos and currently incorporated in Delaware, has become a new #member of the growing UPU CC. Initially an #online #marketplace for books, Amazon’s #businessmodel centres around its #ecommerceplatform. It has developed a comprehensive #ecosystem which has allowed Amazon to become the largest #online #merchant and 2nd biggest marketplace (Gross Merchandising Volume) globally.

In terms of #logistics, Amazon has built up an extensive #network of #warehouses, sorting centres and #microhubs. To further streamline its logistics operations, Amazon has invested heavily in setting up its own #delivery #network to further #optimize #lastmile costs and directly control #logistics & #service levels. #Amazon Prime is already one of the largest last mile service providers: its logistics #valuechain has been expanded by establishing #companies in the air/sea/land #transportsector. Amazon Web Services (#AWS) is the #globalmarket #leader in cloud #computing services.

Amazon plans to provide #input on and to better understand UPU initiatives related to #ecommerce #logistics and the #digital #transformation and has specific #knowledge and #services that can support the sector’s transformation journey. Amazon and Amazon Web Services are looking forward to bringing their organizations’ technical #expertise and #experience to the UPU Consultative Committee and identifying areas for #collaboration and #partnership in ecommerce logistics, #standardization, and the adoption of #digital and cloud technologies.

“Amazon is another very important building block in the #successstory of the opening of the UPU CC. After only six months, membership of global market leaders such as Amazon, DPD and Pitney Bowes is proof that the UPU, in particular its #ecosystem, standards, and services, is of great #interest to the #privatesector,” comments Walter Trezek, Chairperson of the UPU CC. „We welcome Amazon to the UPU CC family and look forward to successfully collaborating in 2023 and beyond.”
