Over the past decade, theย #postalย sector (including courier, express, andย #parcelย #deliveryย operators) has been very active inย #addressingย environmentalย #sustainabilityย issues. The next generation of envelopes and cardboard will probably incorporate digitally-availableย #fingerprintย #technologyย to better manage the circular economy-based use of packaging for non-foodย #B2Cย supplies. When it comes to food B2Cย #supplies,ย #reusablepackagingย will become the state-of art for temperature-controlledย #delivery.
Driven by bothย #deliveryoperatorsย andย #businessesย in the postal sector, harmonizedย #businessย standards have been developed.ย Whenever individual B2C supplies (single parcels containing goods/merchandise) are collected (i.e., warehousing and fulfilment), consolidated forย #freightย andย #transportย (i.e., global multi-modal supply chains), received forย #sortation, and dispatched for final delivery according to the preferences of the end recipient, mandatoryย #electronicdataย elements are made available and exchanged in advance (i.e., UPUโs Global Data Model, EUโs Customs Data Model or IATAโsย Preloading Advance Cargo Information (PLACI)). In order to allocate, quantify, and report theย #environmentalimpactย of parcelย #logisticsย andย #deliveryย operations at item level, these minimum electronic advanced data elements will need to be supplemented by additionalย #dataย elements.ย
Since the 27thย UPU Congress, held last summer, the Universal Posta Union has established itsย #Sustainableย Postal Service Group to work with key stakeholders in defining the scope of a UPUย #technicalstandardย for carbon-neutralย #internationalย delivery, and to implement standards for carbon-neutral cross-border international postal services.
Theย #UPUย standard will be based on pre-existing standards โ EN 17837 (Parcel Delivery Environmental Footprint – Methodology for calculation and declaration ofย #GHGemissionsย and air pollutants of parcel logistics delivery) which aligns theย #methodologyย for calculating and declaring GHGย #emissionsย and airย #pollutantsย from parcel logistics deliveryย #servicesย with existingย #worldwideย andย #Europeanย #standardsย (i.e., ISO/DIS 14083: Quantification and reporting ofย #greenhouseย gas emissions arising fromย #transportย #chainoperations; EN 16258: Methodology for calculation andย #declarationย of energyย #consumptionย and GHG emissions ofย #transportย services) โ to create a uniquely harmonized postal sectorย #solution.
The harmonizedย #measurementย andย #reportingย ofย #carbonย andย #greenhousegasย (GHG) emissions across the postal sector will be supported by the UPUโs 192 Member Countries usingย #OSCAR, the UPUโsย Onlineย Solution forย Carbonย Analysis andย Reporting platform for theย #globalย postal sector.
