This includesย #customerย #demandsย for climate-sensitive postalย #services,ย #climateย #disruptionย #risksย to core postal operations, increasingย #regulatoryย complexity andย #complianceย costs, andย #financialย disincentives for highย #emissionย #assetsย and relatedย #projects.

Meanwhile, there are growingย #greenย #marketsย and financialย #opportunitiesย for fundingย #lowemissionย postal assets and other climate actions.

Following resolution C 17/2021 (Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the postal sector) approved unanimously byย #UPUย members at the 27th Universal Postal Congress in Abidjan, the UPU is now conducting aย #surveyย of its member countries. Theย #resultsย will be used to proposeย #recommendationsย to the Extraordinary Congress being held in October on the feasibility of adoptingย #globalย #voluntaryย #targetsย for the postal sector to reduceย #greenhousegasย (#GHG) emissions.

Theย #purposeย of the survey is to generate aย #globalย #baselineย estimate of Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions from designated operators (#DOs) and to understand the mainย #sourcesย of theseย #emissions:

ยท ๐—ฆ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ ๐Ÿญโ€”emissions from sources that aย #companyย owns or controls directly, e.g., emissions caused byย #operatingย the companyโ€™s fleet ofย #vehicles.
ยท ๐—ฆ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ ๐Ÿฎโ€”emissions a company causes indirectly because of the type ofย #energyย it purchases, e.g., the emissions caused in producing theย #diesel/gas/electricity used toย #powerย a companyโ€™s vehicle fleet.

The survey covers theย #energyconsumptionย of postal buildings and vehicles, emission-reductionย #measuresย and anyย #climatetargetsย that have already been established. The results will be used toย #analyzeย feasible voluntary targets and shape the UPUโ€™sย #capacityย building activities aroundย #climateaction. It will also improve the ability of DOs to manage their particular climate change-relatedย #risksย andย #opportunities.

The UPU sees this survey as the first step in launching extensive andย #strategicย #engagementย in climate action for theย #sector.
